Built at the behest of King João II, it served as a key element in Lisbon’s defence against naval invasions. Taking on the role of witnessing battles with pirates and the armies of other European powers, it has undergone rebuilds and modifications in different historical periods, including defences against Spanish and French forces.

Today, the Cidadela de Cascais is not only a historical monument but also a center of cultural and hotel life. The former military barracks have been transformed into the luxury hotel Pestana Cidadela Cascais, offering tourists a unique combination of comfort and historical surroundings. It is also home to an art center and a museum, allowing guests to experience the rich heritage of the place.

A visit to the Citadel of Cascais is recommended at any time of the year but is particularly attractive during the warmer months when you can enjoy not only the historical sights but also the beautiful views of the Tagus River and the surrounding coastal landscape.

Cidadela and Cascais Fortress is a historical complex fortified on the marina, carefully preserving Portugal’s historical memory. Overlooking the mouth of the Tagus River, it embodies the grandeur of 16th-century military architecture. 

Over time, the Citadel and Cascais Fortress became not only a symbol of defence but also a place of rest for the royal family. Here they spent their warm days enjoying the majestic atmosphere and the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape.

An important episode in the history of Cascais is the Spanish invasion in 1580 when Spanish troops tried to capture Lisbon and annex Portugal.

Today, the Citadel and Cascais Fortress have been transformed into a unique “art district”. Inside its walls is a luxury hotel, the palace of Сascais Citadel and galleries, open to the public since 2011. Guided tours and temporary exhibitions are also available.

For tourists, it is useful to know that near the Citadel and the fortress, there are cozy restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the richness of Portuguese cuisine after an interesting day of sightseeing.

Interesting fact: Cascais was the first town in Portugal to have electricity. This happened in September 1878 and the citadel was the first place where it was used. A statue of King Carlos I, who used part of the citadel as a marine biology laboratory, stands outside as a reminder of this significant event.

Open Hours

The Cascais Citadel is open daily to the public, while the Palace welcomes guests from 10:00 to 18:00 during fall and winter (except Mondays) and from 14:00 to 20:00 during spring and summer (except Mondays and Tuesdays).

Tickets

Entrance to the Cascais Citadel is free for all visitors, but there is a €4 entry fee to visit the Palace.

How to Get to Cabo da Roca

Cascais Citadel and Fortress are easily accessible from the city center. If you prefer to use a car, the attraction is only a 3-minute drive away, as the distance from the center is only 30 meters.
